“Sure a little bit of heaven fell from out the sky one day.”
These are the lyrics that begin an Irish song. These are also the words that remind me of the city block on Cottman Avenue that houses St. Matthew Parish. When I am here, I believe I am on holy ground.
My husband and I have been members of this parish for quite a while. We made a purposeful decision to move here when we were expecting our first child. Both of us, as well as our parents, had been educated by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We believed we had received an excellent education and wanted the same for our children. Four of them graduated from this school, and now two of our grandchildren attend SMS.
In 1990, I took a position as a seventh grade teacher, and the rest is history. My students have been great teachers. I have learned a lot from them, and I hope they can say the same about me.
A great spirit pervades our halls. It has been passed down from generation to generation. Today’s students, as well as our grads, take pride in our school. They enjoying saying, “I am from St. Matt’s.”
At SMS, we offer the opportunity for children to develop a strong Catholic faith, to enhance their academics, and to build lasting friendships. Students leave our school prepared to be tomorrow’s leaders. It is my hope that many more children will get to benefit from the Saint Matthew experience.
